An emergent curriculum is one that builds on children's interests and passions at a certain point in time. Children thrive and learn best when their interests are captured. Learning occurs naturally when educators who are skilled, active, observers of children are able to harness the teachable moments when children are engaged in an experience which interests them. This approach to learning ensures that children are curious and active learners.
Our teacher monitors children’s learning through observation, supported by conversations with the children and families to help identify useful topics for study. Planning is essential and teachers work together to formulate hypotheses on possible directions for learning projects. They purposefully observe each child to identify significant learning when it occurs and confirm that each child’s learning is progressing across all areas of development.
National Quality Framework
Belonging, Being and Becoming - The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) describes the principles, practices and outcomes that support and enhance young children's learning from birth to school age, as well as their transition to school. The National Quality Framework (NQF) provides a national approach to regulation, assessment and quality improvement for early childhood education and care services across Australia.
Every service is expected to develop their own strategy to implement the framework. Our educators subscribe to the planning cycle prescribed by the EYLF. When developing programs they reflect on what works well and what might need improvement to support the most effective and engaging programs based on each individual child’s interests.
Edge Early Learning aims to exceed the national quality standard across each of the seven quality areas which are:
1. Educational program and practice
2. Children’s health and safety
3. Physical environment
4. Staffing arrangements
5. Relationships with children
6. Collaborative partnerships with families and communities
7. Governance and leadership
